Tidal Studios designed a new website for the Scott Arms in Kingston

New Website Design for The Scott Arms Kingston

Tidal Studios has been busy since the turn of the year with several web design projects currently underway. First to go live is a completely new website design and build for the Scott Arms in Kingston, Corfe Castle.

Drink in the view

The Scott Arms is one of the premier inns in Purbeck, commanding possibly the best view in Dorset overlooking Corfe Castle and the Swanage Railway. The pub has been a client of Tidal Studios since 2010 when landlord Simon Coppack first took over the lease and we had done their original website design and build.

Recently the pub has gone into partnership with Henry Scott of the Scott Estates who own land in and around Dorset. This has meant a significant investment with a complete refurbishment inside and out, including the four B&B rooms above the pub. The pub is also now offering a more refined dining experience with ingredients from the Estate’s local farms and other Dorset-based suppliers.

Website design in action

A new website was required to reflect this more upwardly mobile direction. Tidal Studios was commissioned to design and build a completely new site, using a staging domain while the old site remained online.

The style had to be classy and contemporary yet still portray the pub’s pedigree and heritage. We created a new palette, utilising complementing colours drawn from the Purbeck landscape and new photography supplied by Kate Cross Photography. The logo was tweaked to emphasise the brand and to work with the new palette.

Responsive website design

Whilst maintaining a prestigious feel in keeping with the pub’s brand repositioning, the website had to be welcoming and friendly. Henry in particular wanted the pub to remain popular with walkers and dog owners so there’s plenty of references to local walks and our canine friends.

New pages were added for live events and local walks (including route maps) as well as an ‘Our Story’ page detailing the pub’s past and recent history. The website had to work particularly well on mobile displays as many of the pub’s customers would first view the site as visitors to Purbeck. So the responsiveness of the site was thoroughly tested across all devices to ensure the UX was maintained.

A website for the future

External links to the pub’s table and room booking systems (via Dojo and Eviivo respectively) were incorporated with options to book throughout the site. New menus were created and uploaded as viewable and downloadable PDFs. The site has links to the pub’s social media pages which were also rebranded with the reworked logo and colour palette.

The end result ‘ticked all the boxes’ for both Simon and Henry. They were both confident that the website enabled the pub not only to compete against a very strong competition in Purbeck and Dorset but also represented its prominence as one of the top pubs in Dorset.
